Live Review: Bon Voyage 'Booshie'

You might not expect 2015’s most exciting and playful hip hop track to emerge from a rainy small town suburb of Dublin, but haven’t we always been told not to judge a book by its cover?

Especially when this book’s cover is adorned with the enigmatic and vivacious face of Shamon Cassette, the front man for new transatlantic hip hop outfit Bon Voyage.

Bon Voyage comprises the Brooklyn rapper and two Irish producers who have offered up a strong take on the hip-house genre that gripped us for much of 2013. ‘Booshie’ is an updated and refreshed take on this sound, that leaves a lasting impression thanks to its ever so ballsy approach.

It’s kind of like a cool version of LMFAO’s ‘I’m sexy and I know it’ or the super catchy, if slightly gimmicky, Danson & Marlon Hoffstadt ‘Shake That’. Don’t let this put you off though, as what we’re given is a totally unique and addictive number. ‘Booshie’ combines elements of house and hip hop with strong techno influences on the beat – all three songwriters have mashed their backgrounds together to create something pretty neat.

But what does ‘booshie’ actually mean? For those in the know, apparently it’s New York slang referring to someone who is precocious and prone to luxury. Or, as Bon Voyage put it, ‘where J-Lo proudly claimed to still be Jenny from the block, the Booshie girl thinks they should demolish the whole God-forsaken hell hole and build a Louis Vuitton’.

The hip hop trio are releasing their premiere single via Different Recordings, the label that also brought us Felix Da Housecat, amongst others. We encourage you to watch this space.
