Live Review: Jack Garratt ‘The Love You’re Given’

9 February 2015 | 11:19 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

The very talented JACK GARRATT has dropped a single titled 'The Love You're Given, and its soulful tones are very reminiscent of James Blake & Chet Faker.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve been lucky enough to have been graced with some incredibly talented vocalists/producers. CHET FAKER & JAMES BLAKE come to mind first, but there’s even more here in Aus that are particularly on the rise.

A gent in the UK that goes by the name of JACK GARRATT falls neatly into this category, however his sound again, diversifies the genre. His latest single ‘The Love You’re Given’ screams JAMES BLAKE to me, but it also reminds me of Aus star THE KITE STRING TANGLE with the light touches in the production.

It begins with this old world warble that resonates almost as a string line would. It’s quite beautiful, but feels more haunting than anything. The sad piano line emotes kindly with the absolutely gorgeous vocals of JACK himself, and it is then as it progresses that a subtle beat is added to the mid-ground.

This track is one that builds, and thankfully, it continues to build into this amalgamation of greatly intended feelings and soulful tones. The track eventually heightens in such a way that it drops to become this heavily warped, percussive breakdown that essentially heightens further to bring the track to an all time high.

It’s beautiful, heartfelt and heartbreaking all at the same time. JACK GARRATT is making his name known across the world, and this year will be even more huge for this incredibly talented artist.
