Live Review: Royal ‘Cycles’ EP

28 January 2015 | 1:27 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Maryland based producer Royal has just dropped his killer new EP titled 'Cycles'.

Very rare is it for a producer to filter so many genres and sounds throughout one EP. I think it’s a very uncommon feat, and more often than not, it actually goes quite unnoticed.

Maryland based producer ROYAL has just put out his latest EP. Titled ‘Cycles’, it’s a taste of exactly that. When considering what genre’s it scopes, it’s quite diverse and in some instances, miles apart.

For instance, ‘Devil Pt. II’ is a monstrous odyssey that constantly has this sense of some kind of impending doom approaching at the hull. However, in saying that, the rather light-hearted synth bouncing around lifts some of that momentarily and sets the track up for the later portion of the track.

It steps down immensely to the bare minimum, and immediately is forced down into this cesspit of dark sounds, bass and a fantastic snare that later kicks in.

Then again however, you look at the track ‘Passenger‘ and this is comparatively extremely contrastive. It’s rather ethereal with the choral-esque vocals guiding you swiftly through the thunderous samples lurking in the background.

Again, this is all in stark contrast to ‘Mixed Feelings’ and ‘Round Two’ that feature slight bouts of RnB bought rather prominently by DESKTOP. The rather enigmatic artist has only had a real start just recently, but he’s pushing forward and his collabs with ROYAL have obviously been an incredibly killer opportunity for the both of them. Both tracks have turned out incredibly smoothly.

ROYAL’s ‘Cycles’ EP may scope many aspects of house, dance, ambient and RnB, but there’s a centralized focus on a few particular sounds and vibes emanating from the tracks that make them so ROYAL. It’s individual, it’s big when it needs to be and it’s stirring when it needs to be too.
