Live Review: Ricky Eat Acid 'Context'

14 January 2015 | 12:58 pm | Emma Jones

Maryland producer Ricky Eat Acid heads in a completely new direction with his latest track 'Context' off his forthcoming double A-side out 20th January.

Maryland producer RICKY EAT ACID (also known as Sam Ray) made a name for himself with his 2014 release of Three Love Songs; a subdued album filled with his own type of warm electronica. However, whatever precedent he set from that LP has firmly been thrown out the window with his latest track, Context.

Swapping hushed tones for glitchy vocal samples, and contemplative arrangements for tripped out, erratic bursts of synths and rhythms, Ray has really outdone himself with this one!

According to Ray, he says the song "represents someone or something reaching their hands up to try and touch God and falling short, over and over again." Incorporating strings, bubbling synths and breakneck rhythms, the song takes off slowly but surely as it speeds along, only to break and fall back with the introduction of distorted vocals.

The textures and layers of this track make it enormous as it transports you to another world where music like this exists. Studded with cymbal crashes and cyclical synth loops, the track continues to rise and fall, just as Ray described.

Interestingly, the track on his Soundcloud has been hashtagged with "#dante's inferno themed sextape", which is an equally fierce image as the song itself. Although this is in a completely new direction for RICKY EAT ACID, it is one of the more substantive tracks in his catalogue, as it truly pushes limits in his own sound as well as within electronic music.

Context is apparently going to be released on a double A-side come January 20th, with the other track titled Walking Around A Garden At NightRay says this next track is, "music for smoking weed in your car at night, and it aims to sound like music that you would smoke weed to in your car at night." If Context is anything to go by, along with that description, I'd say even more boundaries and limits will be pushed by RICKY EAT ACID in the very near future!
