Live Review: Kelela 'Send Me Out' (Obey City Remix)
Brooklyn's Obey City takes on Kelela's 'Send Me Out' as part of LuckyMe Records' Advent Calendar free downloads.
Last year, LUCKYME RECORDS brought back their Advent Calendar for the sixth year in a row. Each day in the lead up to Christmas, they released a new free download.
On one particular day, they gave the gift of OBEY CITY, and his take on KELELA's Send Me Out. Stripped back, this late night jam is interjected with energetic bursts, yet keeps the vocalist's soulful nature.
The original version of this song, produced by KINGDOM, is a slow and passionate jam showing a sensual side of the singer and her incredible voice. OBEY CITY has taken the subdued parts out and put some downright funky parts in their place, interjecting the track with bursts of grooves and beat breakdowns. The short and sweet remix puts a completely different take on the original, and the vocals are given new life when paired with the almost jazz like remake. What was once a smooth late night track is now the life of the party with it's upbeat arrangements!
The track slinks along until the sharp bursts of funky bass and brass sections come in hot and fast. They subside briefly, leading into a undulating almost extended outro as the song fades slowly into nothing. Both KELELA's fantastic voice and OBEY CITY's production skills are on display here in the best way possible.

OBEY CITY had a busy 2014, and recently took a two week hiatus to work on new music in November. There is no word yet on what 2015 holds for him, but it will no doubt be as impressive as this edit here! This track is up for free download along with the rest of the LUCKYME RECORDS Advent Calendar tracks, including a HUDSON MOHAWKE remix of FOUR TET, RUSTIE editing A.G. COOK as well as unreleased tracks by HOW TO DRESS WELL and BAAUER.
