Live Review: JOY. 'Weather'

27 January 2015 | 1:02 pm | Clare Mingorance

JOY. drops her latest track 'Weather', and there's something truly magic about it.

If there's one thing we've learnt from JOY. in the past few months, it's that she's not one to disappoint. The Brisbane songstress burst onto the scene earlier last year with her track 'Captured', and it was at that moment we learnt just exactly what she was capable of.

Olivia McCarthy is the name, and at such a young age, she sure is setting herself up for a bright future. Just days ago, she dropped her latest track 'Weather', and in true JOY. fashion, we are once again treated to a combination of mesmerising vocals and incredibly skilful production.

'Weather' is the second instalment of her upcoming EP Stone, and just few seconds into this new track, you're already hooked. It's one thing to hear vocals on a song, but there's so much more to JOY.'s voice. There's an undeniable honesty that can be both heard and felt, and there's something just so raw and sincere about it.

With numerous layers of striking percussion, melded with smooth synths, and chopped vocal samples, there's a somewhat darkness to this track. JOY. has created a soundscape that you just can't help but get lost in, and her vocals float effortlessly throughout.

To put it simply, this song just pours emotion, which is not a rare thing for JOY. Her cover of DRAKE's 'Marvin's Room' wowed the music world for exactly the same reason. Showing this much talent at such an early stage of her career, there's no denying that she is destined for great things.

This song drops just ahead of her tour with Adelaide electronic three-piece, FLAMINGO.
