Live Review: GRRL PAL 'Dare'

22 January 2015 | 12:01 am | Emma Jones

Perth duo GRRL PAL have released the January edition of their track-a-month project, in the playful, energetic and most cohesive 'Dare'.

Perth duo GRRL PAL promised a track a month last year, delivering Paradise and NGHT to critical acclaim. January's edition is no exception, with the playful and energetic Dare.

Where the previous two tracks in this series saw the duo playing with lighter dreamy tracks, Dare marks a significant progression for GRRL PAL and their continuing growth and maturity as a duo, and on their own.

Inspired by spin the bottle under the influence, the track is as potent and playful as the inspiration cited. Vocalist JAY LE KAT's ability to shift in pitch from the more serious, seductive hook to the impossibly high-pitched "Come with me/ come with me," gives the track just enough sugary pop to keep with the GRRL PAL sound, but it's DANNY K's stomp-clap beats, siren samples and airy synths that keep the track grounded.

Where previous tracks did little to hide their influences, Dare sees the duo really honing into their own, unique sound. The track is more dynamic, with a lot going on but never leaving control. Although this is the most playful they have been, Dare is also the most cohesive and ambitious track GRRL PAL has made. The pair experiment more and more with layers and production, and each track shows the hard work they are putting in!

The electronic breakdown as the song nears the end, complete with distorted and whirring synths and strong beats fading out is a surprising, but welcome addition, and adds a whole other dimension to the electro-pop track.

This is released as part of their project to release a track a month. We can't wait to see what next month will hold!
