Live Review: Alt-J 'Left Hand Free' (Lido Remix)

1 December 2014 | 12:00 am | Emma Jones

Norwegian producer Lido remixes Alt-J's track, Left Hand Free, complete with gunshots, high-pitched vocals, explosive synths and pounding drums.

It seems no one is exempt from getting the LIDO treatment. Not even tracks released by one of the biggest bands in the world right now, being ALT-J's Left Hand Free

LIDO has reworked the track to be almost unrecognisable, if it weren't for the one-of-a-kind vocals of ALT-J frontman JOE NEWMAN. Layer upon layer upon layer of original samples and lyrics, gunshots, pounding drums and explosive synths; this remix is just as explosive as you'd expect.

Starting off with LIDO's own lyrics, a high-pitched voice sings, "Shoot me down, bang, bang" on loop. The track then features the original vocals, and almost eases you in with it's acoustic bluesy vibe. Gun shots fire, the vocals warp, and the chorus is sung - all the while the track builds in tension.

It creeps in, gaining momentum until about 1:30 when the full "LIDO effect" takes hold. However, in typical LIDO style, just as you expect the track to properly take off he brings it back down, then builds it up again. It's almost as if LIDO knows he's playing with us, yet continues with the electronic ebb and flow his tracks are so well known for.

LIDO's stylistic layering is what puts him in a league of his own when it comes to production. The Norwegian knows what he's doing, and he does it incredibly well. Although it's obvious this is a LIDO mix, and it has a very strong "LIDO" sound, it does highlight the producer's ever improving production chops, as well as his seemingly impossible knack for making a hit song - original or otherwise.

The way the track weaves in and out of explosive synths and pounding drums then pulling it right back into a quiet, almost lull, then right back again to breaking point is something very few can pull off. LIDO is heading down under very soon for fans to catch a glimpse of the man in action.
