Artists To Watch In 2015: Tapes

23 December 2014 | 12:00 am | Hollie Cunningham

Tapes is bringing something new to the experimental electronic scene, truly unique, we can expect big things from this guy.

Since the genre bending of artists like FLUME, TA-KU and GIRAFFAGE bringing us a new experimental-electronic trip hop sound, it's been hard to sift through newcomers and find the ones bringing their own twist, something different, something to prick your ears- Knoxville's TAPES steps up, he's brought something new to the table.

We had our first glimpse of TAPES back in February 2013, when he brought us his 'Infinity' EP, working the experimental sounds with a collection of smooth sensual synths and an old school sexy R & B feel. This was all the bait we needed from him, we were hooked, but to our dismay this was all we got, we were left suspended for nearly a year, wondering if our ears would ever again reach that height of pleasure.

Thankfully he reappeared with 'Waiting' - an atmospheric cave filled with shimmering synths and a hard hitting kick, following this came his full length album 'Finding' this time supporting a punchier energetic vibe resemblant of STAR SLINGER.

His manipulation of samples is admirable, he takes you on a unique TAPES journey and then filters in classics like Craig David's 'Fill me in' in 'Find Y.O.U' and 'Take care' from Drake in his latest track 'Tried to' which youtube channel MAJESTIC CASUAL have been huge advocates of. His creations are effortlessly engaging, he is his own brand and after his year long gap he has made quite a come back with this album, this is only the beginning for TAPES- 2015 can expect big things.
