Where I Swarm: Young Franco On Brisbane

3 November 2014 | 12:00 am | Cheryl Billman

Up and coming DJ Young Franco gives Purple Sneakers the ultimate guide to his hometown, Brisbane.

We’re stoked to be teaming up with JACK DANIEL’S HONEY to bring you tips from seven of our community’s biggest tastemakers, icons and up-and-comers.

Over the next month, we’ll bring you our take on the JD Honey Swarm Series, showing you where the acts you dance to, love to swarm. We’ll divulge everything from where they expand their palate to where they woo potential suitors in their hometown.

The really, really, ridiculously good-looking team at Purple Sneakers pride ourselves on our credo of being trusted for taste, and that doesn’t just apply to new music. We also want you to know where the world's best places to eat, dance and drink are around the world. More importantly, we’re philanthropists at heart with a passion for sharing and we want to improve your quality of life holistically.

That brings us to Brisbane producer, wunderkid (and aptly-named James Franco doppelganger) YOUNG FRANCO who at just nineteen has played alongside acts Alison Wonderland and Flight Facilities and toured Australia’s festival circuit on line-ups for Splendour in the Grass and Laneway Festival. Being a relatively fresh face in the world of electronica, he’s continually proving himself to be one of the most distinctive, exciting producers working in Australia today.

We figured it was a fun parallel to draw – and we totally love any excuse to chat with this guy– so we’re excited to have him kick off this new series in style as he shows us around his hometown (and mine).

Limes

WHERE I DRINK:

Limes Rooftop (Fortitude Valley)

“5 minutes walk from Central Fortitude Valley. Really good tunes and a nice place to chill out. It’s great all year round but the best time to go is on a warm summer night.”

WHERE I EAT:

The Flying Cock (Fortitude Valley)

"Another incredible spot in the heart of the Valley; I’ve been here more times then I can remember. It’s an awesome, refreshing take on classic pub food – 100% recommend the 'Hickory Dickory Cock' burger when you’re in Brisbane next.”

WHERE I RELAX:

New Farm Park

“New Farm Park is arguably the best park to go to when you’re in Brisbane. I don’t go here as much as I used to but I would like to bring my laptop down there and write more often.”

WHERE I PARTY:

TBC Club (Fortitude Valley)

“TBC is week in, week out, the most consistent club in the Valley when it comes to new exciting electronic acts as well as putting through big dance acts. The recent renovation has also improved the overall layout of the club. Dope music, awesome people.”

WHERE I IMPRESS A DATE:

Kangaroo Point Cliffs at night

“Kangaroo Point Cliffs overlooks the city and is incredible at night time with the city lights and Story Bridge. Froyo plus Kangaroo Point cliffs is definitely a winning combo. It’s also really nice to go by yourself to and just chill out.”

Death-before-decaf-2

WHERE I CREATE:

Death Before Decaf (New Farm)

“Sometimes I bring my laptop, grab a coffee and finish songs here. Really nice spot and it’s 24 hours! So whenever you have to work late or whatever, it’s always open and always serving good coffee.”
