Live Review: The Babe Rainbow 'Planet Junior'

24 November 2014 | 12:00 am | Emma Jones

Byron Bay psych rockers get even more chilled out with latest track, Planet Junior, released ahead of their end of year tour!

"Purveyors of all things good and right in the world", THE BABE RAINBOW have had a pretty stellar few months recently. However, it seems they're not done with 2014 just yet and have released Planet Junior just in time. It's a step away from their usual jangly psych rock, blissed out and dripping in psychedelic vibes.

Guitarist Kool-Breeze says of the song, "Planet Junior is the ancient hoeing tool we use on the farm for raking gold from the skies for harvesting." Whatever that means, it's an impressive, reserved and refined track. Showing the band in a different light, the trio send you floating upstream in a tranquil mix of echoey vocal harmonies, crisp beats and their trademark 70's psych guitar melodies.

Clocking in at just over 3 minutes, they've also easily packed a lot into the short time frame. Simple on first listen, then surprisingly complex after that, The Babe Rainbow are growing up in front of our eyes (or ears). Compared to other tracks Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest, 1964 or Love Forever, which all feature a more upbeat vibe, this is a step away - but not a step down. Instead, it highlights the band's previously unknown delicate side, and would definitely help them gain more than a few new fans.
