Live Review: Royal ‘Round Two ft. Desktop’

13 November 2014 | 12:00 am | Caitlin Medcalf

DC native Royal has teamed up with Desktop to release an EP titled 'Cycles'. They've just dropped the second single from the EP, aptly titled 'Round Two'.

There’s nothing really more exciting than the anticipation of a release that you know is going to be insanely good. This is definitely the case for a producer out of DC in the States. He goes by the name of ROYAL, and he is preparing to release his forthcoming EP, ‘Cycles’.

Collaborating with rapper DESKTOP for the record, it’s a refreshing twist on the producer’s already crisp beats that pair them so well. We’ve got a further taste of the EP (which isn’t set to be released until the 26th of January; ‘Straya), and it’s in the form of a single aptly title ‘Round Two’.

I literally only have one problem with this track. And it’s that it’s nowhere near as long as I’d like it to be. But I guess that’s the beauty of it; you kind of get lost in the enthralling sounds of the track, and it cuts you off so suddenly, you can’t help but play it all over again.

ROYAL’s production method (particularly in this track) truly makes this song what it is, and brings it together to make it feel 100% whole. A crisp beat, playful synths and delicately dotted melodies all boost this track to new heights. Definitely a credit to two entirely different genres in themselves, ‘Round Two’ is a refreshing fusion that you’d never think wouldn’t suspect would sound so incredibly innovative.
