Live Review: Bonobo 'Pelican'

17 November 2014 | 12:00 am | Emma Jones

UK Producer Bonobo has released a slightly more club focused track, Pelican. This track is the second release off upcoming EP, Flashlight.

From his forthcoming EP, Flashlight, second single Pelican is the after-hours, laidback club track we've all been waiting for but just didn't know it yet. Having already received the title of "Hottest Track In The World" from none other than BBC RADIO 1's ZANE LOWEPelican is a surprising but welcome change in direction for the UK Producer.

Starting off slow, with a groovy synth and house beat, the track kicks it up a notch as it enters into a house/club zone. BONOBO's percussion skills come in to give the track depth as eerie vocal samples and other spacey noises are heard. The synth evolves into the star of the show, with it's intricate melodies weaving in and out. The almost hip hop snares and scattered vocals stay present for most of the song, until it is slowly stripped back into a whirl of lasers to finish things off.

It's energetic, upbeat and pumping, but still staying true to that signature BONOBO style that gained him so many fans in the first place.

Pelican is the follow-up single to first track, Flashlight, with both showing BONOBO heading into a much more club-orientated arena. The title track is a perfect example of BONOBO's ability to seamlessly glide through genres as if they don't exist at all, and Pelican reiterates that fact. After a string of DJ shows in the US, perhaps this influenced him more than first thought?

BONOBO's Flashlight EP is officially out December 2nd, and you can stream the track below!
