Live Review: FKA Twigs 'Video Girl' (Official Video)

7 November 2014 | 12:00 am | Isabella T

FKA Twigs drops a disturbing yet sensual video clip for LP1 album track Video Girl.

FKA Twigs used to be 'the girl in the video'. The UK songstress - before finding her footing in the musical industry - used to be a backup dancer; staring in music video clips for the likes of  Kylie Minogue and Jessie J. Thankfully, those days are over, with the artist and her avante garde dance moves taking centre stage in new video clip "Video Girl".

Twigs and film have had a long history, with the eccentric singer catching the eyes of the blogosphere through her self released debut EP1, that came with accompanying video clips for each track. Strange and ethereal, they captured the otherworldliness of her music perfectly. More recently, Twigs directed and starred in an experimental concept film  for goggle glasses, which sees the alien princess googling how to krump and dancing widely with a set of anime eyes painted across her face.

Yeah, she's sort of become infamous for her sexual, strange and often disturbing video work, but 'Video Girl' may take the cake. The black and white clip, directed by Kahlil Joseph (who has also worked alongside Flying Lotus), sees the singer convulsing and jolting to her own song in a cell, where a mysterious prisoner  is receiving the lethal ejection. In one particular standout visual, Twigs clamours over the dead body to reach a microphone hanging from the ceiling.

I'm not particularly sure what it all means. But paired with the track's minimalist down tempo beat, it creates a haunting display of death and sex that stays with you long after you've closed the youtube tab.
