Our Favourite Covers of 2014 So Far

6 November 2014 | 12:00 am | Lauren Payne

We have collected our favourite covers of 2014 for your enjoyment.

So only last week us sexy beasts at Purple Sneakers showed you six of our favourite remixes that we thought were better than their original releases.

I'm sure that playlist kept you occupied and entertained over the following days but now the crew have come together again and created yet another playlist for your enjoyment.

This new playlist focuses on the fantastic and innovative covers many artists have produced in 2014. Although these covers are amazing, we cannot say that they are better than their predecessors, only because we love the original mixes of these tracks so much. We are showcasing the covers that are on par with the original artists' interpretation and after a long, long time figuring out which covers to feature, this is what we at Purple Sneakers have come up with.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE have been known to create some slightly stranger tracks. Their famous experimental nature is what makes them such a unique act and HOLOBODY has transformed their track 'Fireworks' into a smooth synth-driven track best played on those lazy Sunday afternoons.

SAFIA 'Cavalier' (JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW Cover)

If you have seen SAFIA perform live this year then you will most definitely have heard their rendition of 'Cavalier'. The track has been a staple in the Canberra trio's live set for quite a while but a few months back they finally released the cover for us all to hold in our hot little hands. We can;t get enough of this cover. The intricate melody, the sultry R'n'B vibes and of course, that spectacularly high note!

DU TONC 'I'm On Fire' (BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN Cover)

Whether you prefer the original or not, you cannot deny that DU TONC nailed 'I'm On Fire'. Originally a rock ballad by one of America's most beloved musicians, the track was transformed by the DU TONC duo back in March. the track features a series of very cleverly structured synths and the vocals of Matt Van Schie crooning us into a deep relaxation.

The psychedelic King of Western Australia, Kevin Parker, posted TAME IMPALA's cover of the King of Pop's 'Stranger In Moscow' back in March and the world kind of stopped for the tracks four and a half minute-duration. having these guys cover MICHAEL JACKSON is something we never thought we'd hear but when 'Stranger In Moscow' was released, the world rejoiced and we received a cover with warped synths and distorted vocals galore.

A rock legend has again been transformed into an electronic masterpiece. Like SPRINGSTEEN, NEIL YOUNG has had one of his tracks covered in synths by French producer JOAKIM. The new version of 'On The Beach' features JOAKIM's distorted vocals over deep, throbbing synths that mesmerise and entice the listener. you can't escape this cover; it's just too good to not have on repeat.

OH MERCY 'Someday' (THE STROKES Cover)

With the announcement that JULIAN CASABLANCAS is coming over to Australia to play a little festival called Falls Festival, we of course can't go past OH MERCY's acoustic cover of 'Someday'.

The track is originally upbeat and full of signature STROKES flavours but here, OH MERCY have created a perfect cover filled with crooning vocals and sweet guitars that just swim around your mind like a whale in the ocean; naturally smooth and at it's own steadied pace.

We now end our playlist with it's youngest contender. DRAKE has been covered like crazy this year but the one cover that trumps them all was recorded live by a Brisbane school girl. JOY May be young but she have the voice of an angel and more talent in her finger than I know I have.

Her deep vocals are paired with a wonderful piano track on 'Marvin's Room' but it's defining trait is definitely the saxophone. Adding a necessary jazz element to the track, the saxophone assists in making JOY's cover the most unique DRAKE cover that we've heard all year.

ASGEIR 'Heart Shaped Box' (NIRVANA Cover)

If you didn't see ASGEIR's stunning performance at Splendour In the Grass this year, you're definitely missing out. Not only is this man's voice beautifully soulful recorded, but live it's even more spellbinding. The Icelandic songwriter's cover of NIRVANA's 'Heart Shaped Box' turns the original grizzly hit into a magical ballad that will not only tug at your heart strings, but actually pull them out and chuck them into the coldest fjord it can find. Those feels.
