Live Review: Chet Faker 'Back'

4 October 2014 | 12:00 am | Lauren Payne

Chet faker has released a new track but it's not what you'd expect.

We've come to adore CHET FAKER and in his brief absence after releasing his debut album, we've been patiently waiting for new material to emerge.

Now our soulful song-man has released a new piece called 'Back' and although, as the song frankly suggests, FAKER is back, the song is probably not what you expected.

When we think about CHET FAKER we think about his unique deep and brooding voice, as well as his majestic beard. We can safely assume that the beard is still in tact however, in 'Back' the signature vocals are nowhere to be found. The track is instead an instrumental journey that is calm and also intricate.

The piece begins very quietly and soon we are introduced to a series of samples and synths that bounce and tap alongside the solid percussion that FAKER has created. 'Back' is essentially a house track, however it sounds like something we're more likely to hear from PLANETE rather than CHET FAKER and it shows that our favourite soul-man has been experimenting like crazy. The brooding synths that hovered during the tracks introduction tend to soften towards the middle. The percussion becomes overpowering until the synths return and the track keeps on moving until it reaches an abrupt end.

CHET FAKER has obviously been hard at work creating pieces that we most definitely didn't expect. It shows us that FAKER's next series of work could be very experimental and that we should be preparing ourselves for FAKER-infused house like we've never heard it before.
