6 Remixes That Trumped The Original

27 October 2014 | 12:01 am | Hannah Galvin

Sometimes a remix blows the original out of the water. Our contributors collaborated to list seven of our favourites.

More so than any other style, electronic music goes hand-in-hand with fantastic remixes. When these interpretations are unleashed for public access, sometimes they’re so well received that they become favoured over the original.

Our contributors celebrated this musical phenomenon by constructing a list of our favourite remixes – the ones we at Purple Sneakers would argue are better than the original. We’ve culled our original, very extensive list down to six amazing remixes by artists from across the globe that go above and beyond.

GINGER & THE GHOST ‘ONE TYPE OF DARK’ (TA-KU REMIX)

Perth resident Ta-ku was born into the scene as an extremely generous artist. Pushing out track after remix, he really wowed us with his take on ‘One Type Of Dark’, which saw us replaying Pilerats’ magazine’s launch video for more reasons than one. This remix even went as far as introducing some of us to Ginger & The Ghost, so snaps all round!

MIGUEL ‘DO YOU’ (CASHMERE CAT REMIX)

Although Miguel’s ‘Do You’ is very slick and sensual, there’s something much more intriguing about Cashmere Cat’s remix of the song. Whether it’s his signature sampling, the build of tension or the almost unexpected orchestral explosion that it evolves into, it’s simply fucking stellar (and one we’ve partied to on many a dance-floor).

FRIENDLY FIRES ‘PARIS’ (AEROPLANE REMIX)

We love, love, love Friendly Fires, but there’s something so very luscious about Aeroplane’s remix of ‘Paris’. Slowing down the tempo and pulling apart the instrumentation to shed more light on that gorgeous melody has really romanticised the tune’s impact. Throw in the vocals of Au Revoir Simone and we had tingly butterflies fluttering through our stomachs uncontrollably [insert lame “just girly things” meme here].

LE TIGRE ‘DECEPTACON’ (DFA REMIX)

Classic alert: Le Tigre, you were really fun, but oh my lord the DFA crew absolutely nailed ‘Deceptacon’. For starters, it’s about twice as long – so there’s more sweat to be broken – but colouring it with extra electronic layers and slowing down the tempo has created a greater and more direct emphasis on particularly the chorus of the track. Plus we’re biased when it comes to James Murphy so..

SAGE THE GEMINI ‘GAS PEDAL’ (MOTEZ EDIT)

Our buddy Motez sure knows how to turn a track right around. From what was originally an intensely dark and heavy moment, the new concoction of beats and synths has made this remix completely and undoubtedly stand out from its predecessor. That bass!

JEREMIH ‘FUCK YOU ALL THE TIME’ (SHLOHMO REMIX)

Shlohmo’s industrial soundscapes are something that has always turned our heads, so this remix he did of Jeremih’s ‘Fuck You All The Time’ is most definitely no exception. Although the intimacy of the original does leave a mark, there’s just something so much more momentous and confronting that takes up the space of Shlohmo’s adaptation.
