Live Review: Haim 'My Song 5' (Movement Version)

6 October 2014 | 12:00 am | Lauren Payne

Movement have covered Haim's track 'My Song 5' and after listening to it, you'll never feel the same again.

Melbourne-based trio MOVEMENT have been upping their game recently and what better way to do that than to cover one of the biggest band sin the world.

HAIM have been killing every festival, live show, television appearance and whatever else since the release of their debut album Days Are Gone and after releasing 'My Song 5' as a separate single, the sisters have had it slowed down and transformed into a sensual masterpiece by Australia's own power trio.

This is the third version of 'My Song 5' to be released. We have of course the original album version, the collaborative version with ASAP FERG (which has an extremely entertaining music video to accompany it), but MOVEMENT's version definitely raises that bar pretty high as it turns the entire track on its head replacing the strong guitars and hard drum beat for brooding synths and deep percussion.

The vocals on MOVEMENT's cover definitely couldn't be anymore haunting than they already are. Every word is embedded in distortion and echoes like a ghost that most definitely has a grudge of some sort. The track still has the angst and edge of the original, but with MOVEMENT's own sensual elements added into it, 'My Song 5' is hauntingly beautiful; not to mention addictive.

MOVEMENT's version of 'My Song 5' can be downloaded for free through HAIM's own Soundcloud page. Don't be afraid to say you love this version because realistically, HAIM and MOVEMENT both have something completely different to bring to the table and now both have their own take on a wonderfully written piece.
