Live Review: PREMIERE: JOY 'Captured' (Official Video)

23 August 2014 | 12:00 am | Lauren Payne

Joy has released her debut single 'Captured' and we have the music video premiering here with us.

We first heard JOY on YOUNG FRANCO's latest track 'Close 2 U', but now we can officially experience her true force through her track 'Captured' and its new music video.

JOY, better known to friends and family as Olivia McCarthy, has a voice that is perfect for electronic music. JOY's voice has a bright energy that becomes infectious the more you listen to it, this girl will do great things and so we should probably keep an eye on her.

'Captured' is a very fitting original debut for JOY. A soft melody with a padded bass flows throughout the track, making it feel relaxed and stable as the vocals slowly emerge from the sequence instead of soaring above it. 'Captured' sounds almost ethereal with the vocals being very hushed and the synths pulsating and remaining tame throughout it's duration. It's emotive and calm and has no trajectory towards a climax, but 'Captured' is still a beautiful piece that feels like a perfect fit for JOY.

The music video for 'Captured' seems to have a lot of string images and features that catch your eye. Snippets of the surrounding city and of JOY setting up her equipment on a roof are soundtracked by the busy city streets, but although they are visually stunning, it's the voiceover introduction to the track that quickly catches your attention. Instead of simply having the text in the frame, 'Captured' is introduced by a radio presenter on a car radio simply stating, "this is Joy with 'Captured' ". Suddenly you are drawn too the bright colours that dance on JOY's clothing and the night scape featuring images of the city around her.

'Captured' introduces us to the world of JOY and what she's capable of. There's no doubt that we will be seeing more of her around in the coming months as more singles are released and more videos are shown.
