Live Review: Capetown ‘Safari Mixtape’

6 August 2014 | 3:24 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Brisbane's Capetown have released a fantastic new mix titled ‘Safari Mixtape’, and it’s basically 25 minutes of deep house glory.

‘House music inspired by local Mexican food carts’ was definitely my first choice of words in describing Brisbane collective CAPETOWN’s music. Maybe not, but their spicy fusion of hot beats, tangy tones and oh so cheesy track choices come together to be rolled into one satisfyingly tasty burrito of sounds.

CAPETOWN are relatively new, so they’re essentially rather enigmatic at this stage in the game. They’ve released a fantastic new mix titled ‘Safari Mixtape’, and it’s basically 25 minutes of deep house glory tied with a boastful dose of ‘tortilla tango’, as described by CAPETOWN themselves.

Keeping with the spicy zing of their recurrent “Mexican food” overlord, ‘Safari Mixtape’ features the likes of DRAKE, KENDRICK LAMAR, MADISON AVENUE and more.

The mixtape is brought to a close with a funk-inspired guitar riff dwindling over the pitch-altered ‘Dreams’ by WET. A satisfyingly filling synth-driven melodic progression will leave your appetite with a big smile.

Give the full 25 minutes a listen; it’s definitely a roller coaster of flavours.
