Live Review: Beck 'Heart Is A Drum' (Official Video)
Take a trip down memory lane with BECK's new visuals for 'Heart Is A Drum'.
BECK, like wine, appears to just keep getting better with age. Although it's somewhat baffling as to how BECK is still continuing on a very long winded winning streak, his release of Morning Phase earlier in the year proved to us all that he won't be slowing down any time soon.
His latest offering comes in the form of a video clip for his track 'Heart Is A Drum', a mellow, downcast track from the latest album. The clip was shot by veteran in the business Sophie Muller, and follows BECK through a nostalgic and confused whirlwind journey that takes him back to his past, through his present and into the possible future. Confronting characters from his past, including icons from his video for 'Loser', which is now 20 years old. Coming across the grim reaper, astronauts, and himself throughout various phases of his life, these visuals feel somewhat like watching the timeline of BECK's existence, but from a place where chronological order seemingly has no meaning.
Shot entirely in black and white, the grainy footage flickers between time periods and surroundings, giving a sense of being stuck somewhere deep in the woods in a state of limbo between reality, memory and dream. Lots of shadows, pace changes and cuts between the frames give the clip a sense of boding evil straight out of a Hitchcock film, but 'Heart Is A Drum' still manages to ring true to the artist's personality by highlighting the quirkiness we know and love.
