Live Review: Banks ‘Drowning’ (Official Video)

3 June 2014 | 7:27 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Banks has released a visually stunning clip for her soul-filled track ‘Drowning’, and it’s just as haunting as the track itself.

Although BANKS only emerged onto the music scene just last year, she’s made the most of every moment. With her debut LP ‘Goddess’ set to be released on the 5th of September through Harvest/EMI, she’s had quite a year.

One of the singles off of her forthcoming album, titled ‘Drowning’, is essentially this haunting soul-inspired track that has somehow managed to skirt the edges of RnB. It’s then been flipped and turned into a wonderland of production, made prominent by the pure bewitching quality her voice holds.

BANKS has released a clip for ‘Drowning’, and it’s just as haunting as the track itself. Playing darkly through a hall of mirrors, BANKS flounces against the lights reflecting sharply from the acute mirrors, accentuating the severity of the presence of her voice in the track. Her thick makeup jutting out at angles from her eyes aids in accentuating the boldness of the track, and it is also the darkness of the hue of the video that has extended this notion.

Essentially, BANKS is dark. She’s brooding. She’s not afraid to put her brand of this multi-genre confusion out there. But ironically, once put together, it’s anything but confusing. Her music seems to be this cool combination of FKA TWIGS and LORDE, but there’s just something about it that seems so proverbial and honest.
