Live Review: Wild Beasts 'Mecca' (SOHN Remix)

27 June 2014 | 3:25 pm | Lauren Payne

SOHN has remixed Wild Beasts and its atmospheric synths will have you drawn in all day long.

Back in 2012 we first heard the smooth remixes of SOHN. DISCLOSURE, ANGEL HAZE and plenty more received the rework treatment from the new producer and soon the hype around him was huge.

SOHN released his debut album Tremors in April and since then he has skyrocketed. He has a collection of beautiful original tracks that we just can't get enough of and he has become one of the greatest producers circulating the scene in 2014. With his debut Australian shows having already come and gone, some fans may be feeling some withdrawals from SOHN, but today we have a brand new remix for you that the man created for WILD BEASTS.

If you don't know too much about WILD BEASTS, let me give you the low down. They're a four-piece from London, they perform very cool pop tracks and their latest track 'Mecca' is what has been reworked by SOHN. The original mix sound very ethereal as it opens with singer Hayden's voice echoing over the synths. With a tenor, falsetto and baritone, the vocals seem to find a sweet balance that carries on throughout their work. A hard drum beat acts as the footprints that walk us through the track and the entire thing sounds slightly magical.

Opening with a similar brooding atmosphere, SOHN's remix uses the atmospheric synths in the original whilst adding in extra swirling synths that writhe around in the stillness like a snake through smoke. The remix slithers alongside a new percussion-based beat that clicks and thumps across the track. The percussion provides the necessary backbone of the track, if it wasn't there the synths would probably run rampant and soon fade like smoke itself does.

The beautiful harmonies return in the remix soaring over the softer synths as the percussion is held back for a while and replaced with a deep bass track. The remix flows just as smoothly as the original but has a more technical face that the original as one has a variety of synths winding through it's structure and the other tends to focus on the organic vocals.
