Live Review: Metronomy ‘Reservoir’ (Official Video)

8 May 2014 | 12:55 am | Caitlin Medcalf

‘Reservoir’ is this bubblegum-pop backing riff, paired with the absolutely lovely vocals from Metronomy's Joseph Mount. The video is terribly fitting.

I remember the reason why I fell in love with METRONOMY’s music in the first place. They seem to just give you every absolute reason to find something to like about it.

Whether it be their minimal use of percussion, their catchy riffs or their vocally stunning song structures, they keep producing minimalist pop that works so well. Much like ‘The English Riviera’, ‘Love Letters’ still has this pristine almost cleanliness to every feature of the tracks. However, ‘Love Letters’ feels as though there’s more electronic production, and I think that’s really cool to hear in terms of progression.

Off ‘Love Letters’, comes the almost anthemic track ‘Reservoir’. ‘Reservoir’ is essentially this bubblegum-pop backing riff, paired with the absolutely lovely vocals from frontman Joseph Mount. Naturally, the video is just as fitting.

A filmstrip created using what looks to be construction paper and felt-tips animates the journey of the cartoon band as they travel to even greater and more colourful places, be it under the ocean, or travelling through a “Willy Wonka”-esque vortex. A brief interlude of the band chatting about sending letters kind of puts it into context, and really enforces this idea of it being a cartoon rather than a conventional “music video” as such.

METRONOMY have created a terribly lovely video with even more lovely themes, and it definitely helps that the track itself seems to just slip right into the skin of the video.
