Live Review: Jungle 'Time'

22 May 2014 | 12:53 pm | Gavin Butler

Jungle's 'Time' is a track that's certain to give a little-needed shot in the arm to the hype that's already at fever pitch around this British duo.

In a musical climate where lush, tropical beats are about as commonplace as your standard salvinia weed, a band name like JUNGLE might seem to entail either a welcome contribution to the equatorial sound of 'now', or just another chip off the not-so-old block. As it turns out, the London-based collective wearing that moniker don't exactly fit into either category.

That certainly isn't to say that they aren't relevant, nor that they don't occasionally hint at the kind of sultry, bubbly rhythms that are associated with the current world-storming trend of 'jungle pop'—but JUNGLE have a more UK funky, neo-soul aesthetic that sets them apart from the rest of the herd.

Three singles have already been released from JUNGLE's upcoming, self-titled debut LP (due for release on July 11)—and, with 'Time', we've been treated to another tasty taster. It's a slightly more fast-paced, upbeat affair than already hit single 'Platoon': whereas that track rolled on steadily with a kind of understated swagger, 'Time' ups the tempo and the synthpop charm.

With hooks as infectious as malaria and enough dreamy pop falsettos to make KATY PERRY roar, it's a track that's sure to give a little-needed shot in the arm to the hype that's already at fever pitch around this British duo.

JUNGLE will be smuggling the party through Australian borders this coming July as yet another highlight act on the 'Splendour in the Grass' bill—expanding to a colossal seven-piece act when taking the stage. If you can't quite make it, make sure you get your rump to one or both of their sideshows, at Sydney's 'Oxford Art Factory' and Melbourne's 'Corner Hotel'.
