Live Review: Joakim 'On The Beach' (Joakim's Cray76 Remix)

26 May 2014 | 9:00 am | Lauren Payne

After releasing his cover of Neil Young's 'On The Beach' not too long ago, Joakim has decided to give it another makeover in his own remix.

With JOAKIM's next full length LP on it's way, we've been hearing some pretty interesting new material from the Frenchman.

One of the first new pieces we heard was 'Bring Your Love', a collaborative track with Luke Jenner of THE RAPTURE, which is a wonderful piece that is perfectly arranged with a series of tribal drums pounding their way through the track, emphasising the man's love for rhythm. The other track we were lucky enough to hear was 'On The Beach', a dark and brooding cover of NEIL YOUNG's track of the same name. If you haven't heard it yet, I suggest clicking over now.

'On The Beach' is one of JOAKIM's most experimental pieces for two main reasons. the first is that he's mixing a very complicated blues track with his signature style of mixed synths that all seem to come from different genres he favours. The second is that this was JOAKIM's first attempt at a cover and in truth, he totally killed it. Soon after 'On The Beach' mad it's debut, a remix of the track emerged from JOAKIM himself under the moniker CRAY76, so we decided to have a listen and instantly loved the makeover.

You can hear the changes JOAKIM has made form the very beginning of the remix with his brooding vocals hovering over a very deep beat that rumbles underneath the haunting vocals. the track builds itself extremely slowly as JOAKIM repeats the lyric, "the world keeps on turning, i hope it won't turn away". the lyrics of 'On The Beach' are very interesting and of course with JOAKIM adding his own flavour to it, it has an entirely new meaning and life. The CRAY76 remix has added in a few more samples and sliding synths that remind you of the producer's regular work, but with a harder techno influence.

'On The Beach' is still just as dark as it's original mix, however with the remix emerging it shows that JOAKIM had a fair few ideas for his first cover that needed to be shared.
