LISTEN: Parquet Courts ‘Sunbathing Animal’

New York locals PARQUET COURTS have previously had a tendency to make music that generally encompasses short, sharp riffs and well-paced vocals set amongst a definitively punk rock palette scheme.

However the newest instalment from these Brooklynites gives an insight into their sophomore album that borders on the sharp-fisted styling’s of hardcore, and stomps profusely amongst the energy and rigidity of 70’s and 80’s punk rock, much unlike we have heard before from the outfit. ‘Sunbathing Animal’ is the first feature track off of the bands forthcoming release of the same title.

‘Sunbathing Animal’ has the pace of a Black Flag song with the aura of PARQUET COURTS previous 2012 release, ‘Light Up Gold’. At times, the track seems overbearing, but then again, who else has tended to challenge things by making essentially a hardcore track that hovers way over the 1-2 minute mark? ‘Sunbathing Animal’ is edgy, risky, and really takes a step away from previous releases, what with this new found pace and unprecedented aptitude for destructive guitar lines.

All of this aside, it’s also refreshing to hear a positively acclaimed band actually do this and test the waters, and if this is what we’ve been given to hear first, I can only begin to imagine how the album will sound in its entirety.
