Live Review: LISTEN: Wax Witches 'Social Introvert'

28 March 2014 | 3:06 pm | Lauren Payne

Alex Wall's Wax Witches have released the first track from their new album which focuses on the life of a 'Social Introvert'.

It's been an extremely long time since we've heard anything from Gold Coast jack-of-all-trades Alex Wall. After moving to Brooklyn, New York in October last year, Wall has been busy writing his new WAX WITCHES album as well as producing wonderful photography and hanging out with the Burger Records crew.

Only playing his first few shows as WAX WITCHES in the United States very recently, Alex Wall has released the first track from his new album called 'Social Introvert'.

The first WAX WITCHES album, Celebrity Beatings, drew a lot of influence from early punk acts. The crunchy and chaotic sound was very unique and began a trend of punk-rock-slacker acts that soon emerged onto the blogoshpere. The new release is slightly different with the sound dipping it's toe into psychedelic territory and adding an extra element into his signature sound.

'Social Introvert' tells a pretty frank story with it's opening line stating "I would rather be here at home / All this work can get fucked". Wall has always had a knack for writing tracks that everybody can relate too, whether it was with WAX WITCHES or BLEEDING KNEES CLUB and here is seems he has written, as SPIN magazine puts it "The perfect anthem for the social introvert".

Lightly distorted guitars open the track before that WAX WITCHES' crunch dives into the track. With a pretty sweet bridge section, focusing on the distorted guitars as everything else is turned down, it shows that 'Social Introvert' has a fair few layers. The layers include the quieter bridge, the harmonious verses and a chorus that just explodes with a series of vocal tracks.

'Social Introvert' tells a very relatable story with a series of distorted guitars and the vocals that we know and love from Alex Wall. With this new release we are sure that the forthcoming WAX WITCHES release will be very refreshing.

The new album, dubbed 'Centre Of Your Universe', will be released on July 1 through Burger Records.
