Live Review: WATCH: YACHT 'Plastic Soul' (Official Video)

17 January 2014 | 11:16 am | Caitlin Medcalf

Paired with typical YACHT-esque 8-bit sounds, this stunning single was dropped with an even more fantastic DIY video montage to accompany it.

Plastic Soul really is the ultimate modern day anti-consumerist anthem. With lyrics describing this new generation as “creatures of comfort, glued to phones and computers”, there is something strangely archaic about the accuracy of the depiction.

Paired with typical YACHT-esque 8-bit arcade sounds pinging in the foreground and background of the track, this stunning single was dropped with an even more fantastic DIY video montage to accompany it. Plastic Soul is YACHT’s comeback single since the Oregon-originated electropop duo released and toured with their highly anticipated 2011 LP Shangri-La.

The video for Plastic Soul takes us for a “day-in-the-life” spin into the casual doings of the group; kids on skateboards, cold drinks during the day and just general group banter.

A quick trip to the beach during the day, stopping to let off as many fireworks as they can during the night, and ending it all with a well-deserved visit to the local karaoke bar, was miraculously all filmed on one fantastically revived VHS camcorder. This really brings back some fantastic home video vibes, and as we all know, nothing feels as good as video tape looks.
