Live Review: LISTEN: Paces 'Julian' EP (Including Remixes By 813 & Chiefs)

28 January 2014 | 6:43 pm | Hannah Galvin

Paces has just revealed his Julian EP, featuring remixes from 813 and Cheifs.

Last year, the Gold Coast's very own Mikey Perry released his debut EP The Pact under the moniker PACES. Having released remixes and singles in between, he's begun 2014 with his follow-up titled Julian that consists of two new tracks with a remix to go with each.

Opening up with the title track, Paces has sourced the help of vocalist Erin Marshall. Follow the two as they muster an exuberant energy made from their warm beats, rich percussion and heavy vocal samples to further complement the passion from the tracks lead vocalist.

Clock over into the following chapter to find 813's remix of its predecessor. With sharp instrumentation taking over the speakers, we're left with an absolute anthem, as this huge track has derived everything powerful from the original, added a handful of extra elements and cranked the entire piece up to an entirely new and staggering level.

'Open Up Your Eyes' sets a completely different mood to what we've heard so far; yet will turn heads nonetheless. Through a steadier series of layers, the track holds itself in a way that is as confident as it is sexy, thanks to the cool undertones that it evokes. Encouraging a serious attitude in both the instrumentation and vocal delivery, 'Open Up Your Eyes' accomplishes everything it set out to achieve.

To close this four-track release is Chiefs' remix of 'Open Up Your Eyes'. With a switch of gender in the vocal department that complements a completely new instrumental framework, Chiefs has employed a brand new look for the later part of Paces' fresh offering. Not only do we experience three minutes of quirky samples and thicker layers, the track also handles a new structure for 'Open Up Your Eyes', as well as a cheekier vibe and greater potential for a dance reaction.
