Live Review: LISTEN: Blood Orange 'Chamakay' (Cousin Cole Edit)

15 January 2014 | 11:20 am | Caitlin Medcalf

Cousin Cole is a New York DJ and producer, his edit of Blood Orange’s 'Chamakay' sees the track come 'out of the bedroom and onto the dancefloor'.

Dev Hynes under the moniker BLOOD ORANGE sees his second studio release Cupid Deluxe out into the world and into the arms his new, old and “forever until the end” fans alike.

The album is ultimately a hardened fusion of darkly-lit dancefloor beats, subtle guitar stabs reminiscent of 1960’s funk and a vocal complexity achieved through its exploration of intricate sounds and vibes. 'Chamakay' is the first track off of the album, and surely sets the album’s smooth tone.

COUSIN COLE is a New York DJ and producer, one with much national and international recognition due to his constant output of quality sounds. His edit of 'Chamakay', sees the track “out of the bedroom and onto the dancefloor”, in the words of Cole himself. Cole puts a spin on the track that ultimately categorises the sound as closer to boogie, than anything.

An emphasis on the harmonic line in the pre chorus, supported by the dapper vocals of CHAIRLIFT’S, Caroline Polachek, throughout the tracks entirety, keeps an utterly smooth-as-silk consistency.

The track has been put together so well, with the addition of the definitive drum beat, the uptake and emphasis put on the original saxophone line within the outro, and yet, the irreplaceable vibe COUSIN COLE brings to his works.
