Live Review: LISTEN: Star Slinger 'I/IV' & 'II/IV'

26 December 2013 | 12:01 am | Hannah Galvin

Star Slinger has edited tracks by Anita Baker and Erykah Badu as part of his favourite diva edit series. Grab a listen and free digital download of each!

UK's Darren Williams - also widely known as production wunderkid STAR SLINGER has provided minor detail of a forthcoming full-length record. In the meantime though, he's been preoccupied creating edits of some of his favourite musicians; uploading them for free digital download via his Soundcloud.

For what will total in four different tracks, Star Slinger has so far released half of the series, each titled in an orderly Roman numeric system. Instead of pulling random tracks of the past, each edit focuses on some of Star Slinger's favourite divas - the first of the lot being an Anita Baker rendition, followed by a mixed up Erykah Badu track. Aiming to have them all up and available to keep by New Years Eve, Star Slinger is clearly doing quite well for time, as we can expect the final two tracks by their desired due date in just as many weeks.

The first track of the set simply titled 'I/IV' walks in with a dance of repression, as its mumbled entry feels just a little too far from satisfaction. Shortly after though, this fourth wall is demolished, and we're finally living within this moment of Anita Baker's 'Sweet Love' receiving the most wonderful Star Slinger treatment. Ultimately a feel-good listen, you can't help but appreciate the Beauty and the Beast vibe it has going on; as the bucketing stomps and beats romantically connect with the fluffy keylines and chopped vocal delivery.

Having a go at Erykah Badu's 'My Life', Star Slinger has shown us that this four-track set isn't made up of just slack improvisation of similar beats and accents, as the tempo and mood of 'II/IV' is considerably different to its subsequent release.

Looping skewed lyrics, reaching for rich percussion and incorporating the dancing piano keys, Star Slinger has dipped his middle and index finger into a pot of paint and applied it across his cheeks as the original track has been introduced to battle - thanks to the crossover of said elements alongside a ruthless kick drum and grooving bassline, all whilst maintaining the soul of the track.

Star Slinger's 'I/IV' and 'II/IV' are available for free digital download now via his SOUNDCLOUD! Keep an eye out for 'III/IV' and 'IV/IV' in the next coming weeks!
