Live Review: WATCH: Blood Orange 'Chamakay' (Official Video)

WATCH the clip to BLOOD ORANGE'S latest single 'CHAMAKAY' from upcoming album.

A few select words come to mind when you mention BLOOD ORANGE: retro-chic, lush, silky... Oh yeah, did I mention sick dancing skills?

Also known as Dev Hynes, BLOOD ORANGE has released the video for his first single 'CHAMAKAY' from his newly announced album 'CUPID DELUXE'. The nostalgically-tinged video follows Dev through Georgetown, Guyana - the birthplace of his mother - dancing along the way, in search of his 92 year old grandfather, of whom he had never met before - their first ever meeting was captured on camera for this clip.

The song itself is so sentimental it hurts - in a good way, of course. The track is drenched from beginning to end in a veil of etheral and dreamy vocals blanketed with layers of synthesizers, however CHAMAKAY has an almost tropical sense of tone to it that shines through amongst all this nostalgic haze. Marimbas and shuffling rhythms divide these usual sounds that we've come to know and understand from BLOOD ORANGE, throwing something daringly new into the mix.

For me though, there are two things that stand above the rest when it comes to CHAMAKAY and its video clip. Number one - Dev's avant Jackson-esque dance routines throughout this video suit the track so well, combined with his choice of retro-chic fashion style, the combination is oozing with his personality. And, number two - the face-melting yet soothing saxophone solo that carries out the final moments of the track. Sorry to ruin the surprise for you, fellow sax enthusiasts.
