Live Review: LISTEN: Le1f 'Tree House' Mixtape

22 September 2013 | 8:40 pm | Nick Luke

Listen to Le1f's latest mixtape 'Tree House'.

NY rapper LE1F has returned to the forefront of the rap game to bring you his latest 'TREE HOUSE' mixtape for free.

Since he burst onto the scene last year with his video clip for his intensely bombastic 'Wut' (produced by 5kinAndBone5) LE1F has steadily been gaining momentum appearing as a forerunner for a brave new rap scene born out of New York, with other such rappers as Cakes Da Killa. This year has seen LE1F already releasing a handful of material, both mixtapes and singles, but it feels like 'TREE HOUSE' is his next big statement since he initially appeared all over the internet.

The mixtape itself, which is available for free download, is somewhat a departure from the his more upbeat and in-your-face sound that was heard on 'Wut'. Each track sounds very deep and dark, yet smooth and silky. This sound compliments his sensual lyrical content and tone, the overall feeling of 'TREE HOUSE' is drenched in sexual explicitness, a sound that soflty screams after-hours nightlife. There is more attention to harmony in this release than in his past tapes, with featurettes from singers and even auto-tuned passages from LE1F himself, which surprisingly work really well.

With production credits belonging to some familiar names, it's easy to see the LE1F has found his niche sound. Producers such as Boody, FaltyDL, Shy Guy, and The Drum to name a few, all see a themselves with tracks featuring on the tape, some names usually appearing more than once too. This solidifies 'TREE HOUSE' with a sound that's cohesive and continual from beginning to end, but with enough variation in instrumentation that it doesn't get stale throughout the tape's lifespan.

The 'TREE HOUSE' mixtape by LE1F is available for stream and free download via his Soundcloud.
