Live Review: LISTEN: French Horn Rebellion ft. Deidre & The Dark 'Don't You Want Me' (The Human League Cover)

4 September 2013 | 9:00 am | Antigone Anagnostellis

French Horn Rebellion have teamed up with Deidre & The Dark to give us their rendition of The Human League's 'Don't You Want Me'.

Let’s face it – people who were born in the 80s are getting older and are already reminiscing about the era of keyboards, guitar-synth melodies and catchy lyrics. One so classic track (with a hopelessly dramatic music video to match) is “Don’t You Want Me” and Brooklyn dance duo FRENCH HORN REBELLION have brought on a modern twist.

The cover has a slightly slower tempo and so is longer than the original but keeps the playful beat. The funky double bass opening plunges us into the retro mood. Later on, Deidre & The Dark brings the female vocals “I was working as a cocktail in a waitress bar.”

Less about the heartache than the danceability of the track, French Horn have almost put the track further back into the past with disco synth, smooth vocals and orchestra elements (hello French horn). Sometimes it works to chuck away the 80s melodrama and focus on the tunes.
