San Fran beatmaker Charlie Yin aka Giraffage is the latest producer to bring out a Fader mix, following the release of his debut album Needs in February.

FADER mixes are an opportunity for artists to delve into their record collections and share with the world what they are digging at the moment. All of which means it puts their work into the context of the genre-melding scene out there while creating their own sound bubble for audience appreciation.

Solid mixes in the past have come from Bondax, Jagwar Ma and even Flume, each bringing something different to the table with a slight tweak of their usual sound.

San Fran beatmaker Charlie Yin a.k.a GIRAFFAGE is the latest producer to bring out his Fader mix. He performed at SXSW earlier this year following the release of his debut album Needs in February.

Giraffage builds up the lush intro into a cosy preamble of what is to come. With a combination of pop aesthetics, dance groove and hip hop beats he carefully selects the best parts of each genre for a futuristic, complex creation of his own.

The dynamics are seamless, smoothly navigating from cheery synth to deeper, heavier grooves and minimal vocals keep it light (except for the cheeky edit of CeCe Peniston’s 1991 sing-a-long dance hit ‘Finally’). In an instant Giraffage takes us from the ghetto house of Parris Mitchell to an R&B Cassie track and then crawls into Lil Silva’s bass-driven work.

Although implicit, the direct connection between sound and sensibility means that his pop aesthetics create a sense of nostalgia – without becoming a tribute mix. Better a wind down in the early morning than a dance mix Giraffage manages to keep the production loose and free flowing without becoming too obscure.

I’m not sure why he rounded it up with a rework of Linkin Park’s ‘In The End’ but you have a listen for yourself and see how it sticks. This fader mix is up for free download:
