Tom Hutchins is the Top Dog over at WE TALK YOU DIE, a blog dedicated to what’s new and different in music scenes here and overseas. He is also one of our dedicated Sub-Editors here at Purple Sneakers.

When he’s not busy writing and dealing with music related business, he’s most likely catching up with Friends… the TV show. But since he only has access to 4 episodes a day (thanks for that Freeview), we got him to sit down and sift out his Top 10 Soundcloud tracks. Take it away dude!

"To me, Soundcloud is the perfect place to discover beats, with almost every beatsmith in the world coming together on this site. So since that’s pretty much all I’ve been listening to over the past month or so – I’ve decided to keep this Top 10, purely beats specific. And no, there will be no Flume here."

LANA DEL REY ‘Summertime Sadness’ (RYAN HEMSWORTH Remix)

This is honestly the only way I was ever going to listen to LDR. Hemsworth is by far the best producer I’ve come across over the last year (at least) and this has to be one of his finest remixes so far. It’s classic Hemsworth, all bass and all hilariousness. Let us hail the Canadian king of the bootleg.

LUCIANBLOMKAMP ‘You & Me’ (Feat ROSEBUD LEACH)

This is a 19-year-old kid from Melbourne that I’ve been following for a couple of months; so much so, he recently gave me his first interview ever. He makes seriously dark and haunting beats and this cut from his debut EP (which you can DL for free) is just one of five brilliant tracks.

MGKRP ‘snctury-c180’

This guy is a very good friend of mine, although that’s not why he’s in here. He’s still very young, but is making serious headway right now. He posts beats very frequently, rarely sticks to one genre and has a sweet sense of humour about it all. This one is from his latest release, and is most likely going to be the most lo-fi thing you’ll ever here.

ELECTRIC SEA SPIDER ‘Capetown’

Jim Sellars is the best Australia has to offer in terms of beats, and this bonus track from his amazing Supercash LP is a perfect example of why. There is just so much going on in here, so many tribal samples and wonky synths – yet it all comes together to make another special track.

JAMES BLAKE ‘Every Day I Ran’ (Feat BIG BOI)

This bonus track from the new LP is almost my favourite, a throwback to his earlier beats days – with some serious sampling. It shows a slightly different talent that he processes, and proves this guy really is a genius.

PLANETE ‘Stars’

Another young kid from Melbourne. Barely played more than one live show, yet channels bands like Seekae with ease. Extremely beautiful creations, and shows huge potential.

THE KILLERS ‘Mr Brightside’ (LUCIANBLOMKAMP Remix)

I know that I already touched on Lucian, but come on. It’s a freaking ‘Mr Brightside’ Remix!!!! Regardless of the music you’re into, you have to appreciate how great this is.

KANYE WEST ‘Mercy’ (CRESENT Remix)

The most recent signing to Melbourne collective //THIS THING//, is a faceless kid known as Cresent. He has a debut EP out soon and this remix is the first taste of it. It’s so distorted that it may as well be considered an original and his lo-fi, Internet influenced beats are a talking point right now. I’m not sure that he’ll live up to the hype, but this is a very strong way to start.

FRIENDSHIPS ‘1 am’ (Slow Release)

Melbourne’s king of Bass is Friendships. He creates bass music with a distinct difference; it has substance in a genre that is full of pure nonsensical shit. ‘1am’ has all the bass you need, yet contains some serious intricacies that will keep you interested the whole time. He’s so much fun, and has so much talent.

FISHING ‘White Sheet Beach’

To finish this off is a bit of a throwback to 2012, with the b-side to this Sydney duo’s ‘Choy Lin’ 7”. They were the first beats act I got into and they will always be one of my favourites, every track is so complex, yet still remains to be light-hearted and fun. This one is no exception, it shows a progression in their sound, and makes me so excited for their next release.
