Live Review: LISTEN: Future Classic DJs 'January Heatwave 2013'

18 January 2013 | 10:30 am | Hannah Galvin

Future Classic DJs have put together this bundle of joy to celebrate our Summer months!

The happiness that Summer evokes can be such a cliché. You're festooned with ideas of the beach, late nights, tanned skin and all of that other crap you'll find in teenage girl magazines.

But when it comes to music, it's sometimes okay to want to appreciate our stereotypical Summer that society has so gladly drilled into our heads. This is the case when listening to FUTURE CLASSIC DJS' latest installment - 'January Heatwave 2013'.

At points of the mix, you'll imagine launching yourself off a cliff into the ocean, dancing in a grungey night club, driving along a coastal road without having any means of a destination and simply just hanging out with some good music.

Let me tell you, that sort of good tunage can be found in this generous slice of sonic gold.

Opening with Paradis' remix of 'Back To You' by Jacques Renault, we're instantly introduced to a rather intrinsic mix up. After building up for the first seven minutes of this hour long set, we find ourselves in a completely new atmosphere with the Ame remix of Frank Wiedemann & Ry Cumming's 'Howling'. The opaque bassline of this heavy track makes you feel trapped underwater. See? Cliché! But it's such a good feel.

The mix from here takes us through a topsy turvy land of the unknown. The selection of tunes and where they've been placed in the set has been done in quite a brave manner, considering the juxtapositioning. Having said that though, it performs well as the mood that this set emits clicks with its audience. It just works.

Other tracks you'll find throughout this set is Four Tet's remix of Ultraista's 'Small Talk', Jessie Ware's 'Wild Movements' remixed by T. Williams and Andrea Oliva's remix of 'Rise of Angel' by Luciano.

After Tame Impala's 'Why Won't You Make Up Your Mind', Future Classic wrap up with Jagwar Ma's 'Come Save Me'.

Closing with such a jam leaves you feeling refreshed and exuberant after the joyride FC had just taken you on. It's due to those textured harmonies, strong beat and elongated vocals that inject you with that boost of energy.

A very well established mix from the DJs of the Sydney based record label/touring agency/artist management team/music publisher, 'January Heatwave 2013' is definitely one well worth a listen.
