Live Review: WATCH: Flosstradamus 'Banned 2' Mixtape Preview

18 January 2013 | 9:00 am | Lauren Payne

Chicago boys J2K and Autobot aka FLOSSTRADAMUS can mix hip hop, pop AND electronic beats together to create something that you just can’t help but love

Everybody knows that mixing genres is something that has just blown up over the past few years. Whether its mixing pop and rock, or hip hop and dubstep (360 anyone?), the mixing of genres has become something that you can either gain huge success with, or just crash and burn with.

Luckily Chicago boys J2K and Autobot aka FLOSSTRADAMUS can mix hip hop, pop AND electronic beats together to create something that you just can’t help but love.

Now FLOSSTRADAMUS may be creating some new tracks left right and centre – ‘Big Bills’, download it, now! – but the FLOSS also make some pretty awesome mixtapes. One that received quite a lot of recognition was the mixtape ‘Banned’. Now ‘Banned’ featured some pretty dope tracks from other well-known artists such as MAJER LAZER, DIPLO, KANYE WEST and even the lovey M.I.A, but of course that mixtape couldn’t be complete without a few tracks from the boys themselves, ‘Roll Up’ and ‘Underground Anthem’. And now, FLOSSTRADAMUS have decided to put together a follow up to this fantastic gathering of tracks which has been so rightly named ‘Banned 2’.

Now the entire playlist isn’t ready for international takedown just yet, but the boys have released a small preview of the mix on their YouTube channel Flosstradamus Hoodieboyz, and that’s with a z. The video features the lovely J2K or Josh Young as his mother would most likely call him, walking into the lobby of his hotel, getting out his keycard, riding the elevator up to his room and saying hi to his good mate the internet until he sits down, relaxes, and explains what this little video is all about.

The mixtape begins with a short conversation where FLOSSTRADAMUS are explaining that there are plenty of underground artists that deserve attention, until suddenly there’s a big burst of sound, a loud, deep voice announces the mixtape and then some pretty awesome samples sweep together in a mixture of heavy beats and solid hip hop tracks which have now been brought together with some electronic pieces and see if you were playing this at your next party, everyone would love you!

The mixtape sounds like it’s coming along smoother than a Caramel Koala’s gooey centre so I’m sure it won’t be too far off. But good news everyone, FLOSSTRADAMUS are going to be touring this fabulous country of ours in February and to our lovely kiwi neighbours, you can expect them soon too with shows in Wellington and Auckland. But really the most important thing to remember is that they are actually playing our very own Can’t Say party on the 15th of February, so get pumped people. The dates are below and perhaps the boys might play ‘Banned 2’ for you all, you know, if you’re lucky.
