ARTISTS TO WATCH IN 2013: XXYYXX

10 January 2013 | 11:28 am | Hannah Galvin

Florida's 17 year old producer Marcel Everett - better known as XXYYXX - is definitely a very talented dude to keep an eye on this year!

Let’s reminisce for a moment on when we were 17 years old. Some of us were battling our last year of high school, some of us had started an apprenticeship, others just burnt out from life and became couch potatoes..

For whatever your last year of being underage brought you, I’m sure you hadn’t released a handful of EPs, albums and remixes and toured internationally. Not unless your name is Marcel Everett of course, better known by his moniker XXYYXX.

Based in Orlando, Florida, Everett got into music at the age of 13. After playing in some bands, he broke away from his fellow members and jumped into the pool of production just two years later.

Ever since, Everett has been making some pretty dope tunes, using his bedroom as his studio. Find yourself astounded at how impressive his musical creations are, considering he’s only 17 years old. I definitely was.

Placing his music under one specific genre has proven difficult. What I do know is that he isn’t into being classified as “contemporary blogwave”, “chillwave” or “drugtune”. He prefers “experimental bass” due to his ongoing exploration of filters, effects and synths.

Everett’s stepped out of the realm of his own hometown, showcasing his young talent not only in America but throughout Europe as well.

He collaborated with Giraffage last year, releasing their track ‘Even Though’ via the prestigious label Kitsune. The song was featured on the Kitsune AMERICA compilation, which saw XXYYXX play at the compilation’s launch party in New York last May.

He’s also spent some time working with Australia’s Ta-ku. Considering the funky soul charm of the Perth producer and the “peace and still sadness” that XXYYXX’s music omits, it seems like a masterpiece just waiting to drop in our laps.

It’s quite apparent that young Marcel has seen some pretty amazing things venture their way into his life of late. And it’s all come from doing something that he loves.

After absorbing the notions of his career thus far, it makes nothing but sense that XXYYXX is definitely an artist to be keeping an ear out for not only this year, but for the eternity of the producer’s place in the music world.

Ps. I strongly suggest you buy his self-titled album off his BANDCAMP. Think of it like eating your greens - this stuff is good for you.
