Live Review: LISTEN: Yale's Self-Titled EP

20 November 2012 | 10:30 am | Hannah Galvin

Brisbane disco-pop duo Yale have only just released their debut self-titled EP. Featuring four cruisy tracks, it's quite a fitting soundtrack for Summer.

Having established themselves just last year through their remixes of tracks for groups such as PNAU and YesYou, Brisbane disco-pop gems Stefan Emslie and Mark Maxwell - better known to their party-goers as YALE - have finally released their self-titled debut EP!

Describing themselves as "an expression of how live music interprets dance and seeks to explore the euphoric feeling of being young," Yale have pulled off exactly this through the release of the EP.

The EP opens with 'Getaway'. Although not a newbie, this track is a special one as it was the duo's debut single back in 2011. Quite an infectious tune, the tropical lyrics and fruity synths make you feel as though you're immersed in a sonic body of disco water. The harmonious vocals and gentle beats allow this track to play out in the smoothest of ways.

'Private School Girl' contains some pretty obvious, flat lyrics throughout the verses. However, they are executed in a delightful tone thanks to the pretty vocals of Stefan Emslie. A little more upbeat compared to 'Getaway', this track tells a story about escaping the materialism and casting a deeper, more humane image of a person, as opposed to the cliched portrayal that can be cast upon private school girls.

With the synths sounded as though they're on some sort of quest, 'The One That Got Away' is definitely the most upbeat track on the EP. The lyrics come across as a little frustrated as you'll find that the chorus tends to drill itself into your head vocally each time it comes around. And that's the way it stays - a frustrated tale. There's no happy ending to this track.

Backing up the EP's release, there will be a remix package of 'The One Who Got Away', featuring mixes from YesYou, The Kite String Tangle and Meare.

Yale's self-titled debut closes with the fourth and final track, 'Lost In The Crowd'. With 'Getaway' making you feel like you're blissfully swimming around in a body of water, 'Lost In The Crowd' sounds more like the beach party itself taking place on the sand rather than in it's wet surroundings. There's just something so feel good about that subtle guitar and ceremonious synth that open this track. As you climb through the verses and eventually discover the chorus, you'll find that the track only escalates from its positive starting point.

Ultimately, you've got four tracks that work cooperatively with the upcoming Summer months. The songs are built on cruisy synths, consistent beats and heavenly vocals. The end result supplies you with a gentle array of moderate-tempo disco beats that are worth dancing to and will no doubt capture the attention of any guest at a Summer party.
