Live Review: LISTEN: Jamie Lidell 'What A Shame'

27 November 2012 | 1:44 pm | Rebecca McCann

Jamie Lidell's brand of neo-soul meets percussive electronica from the heart of white-as-egg-white England fits neatly into the so-hot-right-now blues niche

With the hotly anticipated release of Texan blues prodigy GARY CLARKE JR's Blak and Blu LP, the sexy-as-hell and timeless genre is sah especially hot right now. JAMIE LIDELL's brand of neo-soul meets percussive electronica is at home in this niche.

JAMIE LIDELL's distinctly urban flavour might throw you off the scent of his trail, which leads right into the heart of white-as-egg-white England. 'What A Shame' is the lead single off upcoming self-titled LP, which will be released through Warp Records.

Previous tracks of LIDELL's such as 'Multiply' found a natural home on adult contemporary drama series Grey's Anatomy, and certainly his style could slide easily into this space of cafe soundtrack material.

'What A Shame' does not belong in a cafe. It belongs in your fat speakers at home, or fuck-off headphones on a train, or anywhere you are happy to groove. It's difficult to resist the dirty beats herein, which break through a heavily distorted intro, and don't let up. So turn it up. Get down. Repeat. Watch the below trailer released by Warp Records in anticipation of his upcoming February 2013 release.
