Live Review: LISTEN: DZ Deathrays 'Dollar Chills' (OPOSSOM Remix)

19 November 2012 | 10:30 am | Hannah Galvin

Psychedelic gems OPOSSOM have remixed DZ Deathrays' 'Dollar Chills'. Painting sounds reminiscent of Beastie Boys and Portishead, it's defs worth a listen!

Imagine bands as ingredients for a musical beverage. Pour half of the thrash, metal, slacker punk of DZ DEATHRAYS. Now fill the rest with the psychedelic, dreamy, sweet pop of OPOSSOM. Blend the two together and you get a completely new result; a cocktail not sounding anything like the two bands at all. This is what's happened with OPOSSOM's mix of DZ's 'Dollar Chills'.

Very different to the original's heavy, fuzzy guitar riff and subtle yet progressive drumming, this remix opens up in a trip-hop sort manner, sounding similar to that of a Portishead song. The multiple disheveled layers are coupled with fragmented beats. Although it's not all broken up - there are a few strong and consistent sounds that help carry out this tune.

Once the layers have established themselves, the original lyrics are introduced, but not in the way they were once portrayed. At times, they sound like they've been affected by a bad aerial as the words have been muffled and distorted. By this point, the song has evolved similar to that of a Beastie Boys song circa III Communication. Think of their tracks 'Bodhisavatta Vow', 'Do It' and 'B-Boys Makin With The Freak Freak'. This track could easily be wedged somewhere in between these funky tracks.

Currently finishing up their UK tour, catch DZ Deathrays in Brisbane next to Bleeding Knees Club and Yacht Club DJs (as well as special guests) for I OH YOU's Call The Cops Xmas Party. This will be held at the Rev on Thursday, 13th December.

They'll also be supporting Sleigh Bells in January! Woo!
