Live Review: WATCH: Die Antwoord 'Fatty Boom Boom' (Official Video)

So we all know LADY GAGA has been the butt of many jokes (I will put none in here as examples because who knows who might hunt me down…). But recently South African hip-hop dynamos DIE ANTWOORD have presented the eye-popping singer in a new light that made me laugh like crazy.

Taken from their most recent album Ten$ion, DIE ANTWOORD’s new single ‘Fatty Boom Boom’ is a fiery track with Ninja and Yo-Landi rapping so fast you’re guaranteed to get lost very quickly and the only lyrics you’ll be able to hear will be “fatty boom boom” and “ching ching”. But it’s not the lyrics that have made ‘Fatty Boom Boom’ so controversially successful, oh no my friends. The video is refreshingly different and although it’s sparked even more fire from LADY GAGA. DIE ANTWOORD and GAGA haven’t seen eye to eye since GAGA tried to snag the rap-rave group as her opening act.

DIE ANTWOORD declined and then called GAGA’s work “weak, superficial shit”. It seems DIE ANTWOORD have their own opinions which is fair enough, and now you can see the um, (I don’t wanna say feud because I just hate that word) disagreement in the video for ‘Fatty Boom Boom’.

Opening with a man dressed as GAGA, in her signature meat suit, being driven through South African slums, you would think ‘Fatty Boom Boom’ was a short film sort of piece. And it kind of is. GAGA is driven around until suddenly they pass DIE ANTWOORD and GAGA says “I should get them to open for me,” yeah, they’ve poked the dead ferret. A group of muggers attack the van and shoot the driver, but GAGA slips away and is soon running through South Africa alone.

With Ninja painted red and white, and Yo-Landi highlighting her white-blonde locks with back body paint, DIE ANTWOORD go crazy with hyper dance moves and more crazy costumes. It’s like a regular dance party on acid, and looks like great fun. Throughout all this, GAGA gives birth to a bug and is eaten by a lion, so we can safely assume that DIE ANTWOORD had fun making this video.

DIE ANTWOORD have grown on me in the past year and their attitude is just something you don’t find much of anymore. The rapping, raving, crazy kids may be “feuding” with GAGA but I say hey, not everybody can get along. And the tune is catchy, it’s great.
