INTERVIEW: Melodys Echo Chamber

20 October 2012 | 3:00 pm | Joshua Daydream

This week, our very own Joshua Daydream had a chat with Melody Prochet of Melodys Echo Chamber

This week, our very own Joshua Daydream had a chat with MELODY PROCHET of MELODYS ECHO CHAMBER.Could tell us a bit about Melody’s Echo Chamber, a bit about the band and how you got together?

Well my band it’s actually my personal project,I’ve always been writing songs on my own and the echo chamber is me meeting Kevin Parker sometime in Paris and making him my producer and we recorded all the songs in Perth.

How was hanging out with the TAME IMPALA boys?

It’s was really awesome, it was only Kevin Parker that produced the album but we we’re living in a share with the guys from POND and from TAME IMPALA and all these people who seemed to come right from the seventies. They are really hilarious people and also Perth is just a beautiful city so it was really cool.

Great! Well the new record is just out and it’s very psychedelic and sun drenched, could you tell us about your influences when recording?

M: Well I have been listening to a millions bands over the last few years and I think there is a bit of everything in there, I don’t know, I like, different music. I like artists that try to reach the greatest expressive intensity you know, I have always bee fascinated with production and drum sounds, I’m not really good at it myself though.

How was working with Kevin (Parker)?

Yeah it never felt like working, it was heaps of fun and Kevin is the most lazy producer I know, he’ll just want to work maybe one hour a day then he spend like three hours on his oscilloscope drawing new oscilloscope drawings with wave sounds, he’s the biggest nerd and a big guru of sound. Then we’d just go to gigs all the time and go to the beach and like hang out in the backyard with like 15 friends so It was just like the best time of my life I think.

Back to the Echo Chamber. Where did you get such a great name?

Actually it came because when we were mixing the record, Kevin in between sessions was always on eBay trying to find cool gear and he was looking at this echo chamber and he showed it to me and was like, ‘I wanna buy it but we’re so broke we can’t have it’ so we didn’t buy it. But after that I have this dream this night where my bedrooms acoustics kept changing to echo infinite mode and my body rebounded endlessly in my dreams and it woke me up you know, Imagine if you could have a switch that changed your bedrooms acoustics, and this dream stuck with me and I was like if it were mine it would be called Melody’s Echo Chamber and we were just like let’s call that my project. and yeah I don’t regret it at all.

You really must bring your Echo Chamber to Australia.

Actually I think next year we are organising a tour I am looking forward to coming to Australia but it’s really expensive to get there so I hope we can come.
