Live Review: REVIEW: Chicks Who Love Guns ‘Mooneater’

17 September 2012 | 12:00 pm | Joshua Daydream

Joshua Daydream has a listen to the latest release from Sydney lads Chicks Who Love Guns

So I was having a chat with Mody Grant, the guitarist from Sydney rock n roll outfit CHICKS WHO LOVE GUNS and he just so happened to mention that this sucker right here (see photo) is being release this friday at The Standard in Sydney.I asked him to swing me a copy to so I could do you all a favour and write about it.

Having thrown the disc into my mac, I had expected my laptop to start buzzing or spontaneously combust though instead Gracenote popped up telling me that there were multiple discs being recognized; one was, Lars Christiansen’s ‘Jetzt Weht Der Wind Aus Norden’, a German single release on Elephant records circa 2003, go figure… The other being CHICKS WHO LOVE GUNS new EP ‘Mooneater’.

Upon hitting play the first track and lead single ‘Shin-Okubo’ kicks in pretty immediately after a quick fuzzcrackle. It's a super tight, layered production that stays true to their raucous sound.

Having recently put out a pretty amazing cover of Tyler The Creator’s ‘Yonkers’, Chicks Who Love Guns show that they are not a one trick pony like many other acts circulating the dingy bars and city streets, instead showing a more dynamic range whilst still retaining their grunge aesthetic.

Title track Mooneater is a must hear, initially I feared the worst, thinking the band had gone down the electro rock path though they pull it off well. Quicksand is a more spacious tune that still holds the energy of the previous tracks during the verses, CWLG well and truly hit the gas during the chorus of this one.

Every track sits around the three and a half minute mark, you are definitely left wanting more from each of them

Catch them this Friday 21/9 at The Standard on Tailor Square.
