Live Review: WATCH: Timothy Carroll 'If I Were You'

The new Timothy Carroll video 'If I Were You' is deep and haunting. Catch him on tour soon to see what all the hype's about.

After recently returning from a tour of Europe (including playing Glastonbury), Brisbane’s Timothy Carroll is back on home soil, bringing with him ‘If I Were You’, the first single off his sophomore album When the Storms Would Come.

The song itself is great; I’m a sucker for a clean guitar sound. The song is produced by Matt Redlich, who has recorded Ball Park Music, Hungry Kids of Hungary and Emma Louise among many others. He seems to know how to make any song sound amazing and he definitely has not disappointed with this track. If this is how the entire album is going to sound then save me a copy now.

Along with clean guitar, I’m also a sucker for black and white. Pictures or video, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s done well. And while the clip for ‘If I Were You’ is not the best black and white video I’ve ever seen, it’s still pretty damn good. The clip starts off with some derelict street shots: shady building walls, alley doorways, chain link fences and plenty of graffiti (including a shot of some graffiti stating ‘Show your tits sensitive side’ which I found funnier than I probably should have at my age). In a weird way the clip kind of reminds me of the video for 'American Slang' by The Gaslight Anthem, both videos are shot completely in black and white and are beautiful in a depressing and sad sort of way.

I could probably see the song as background music to one of those movie scenes where a character is travelling somewhere, head against the window while it rains outside. But maybe that’s just me. The crazy montage of old stock footage towards the end is a nice little variation on the classic black-and-white, graffiti covered abandoned buildings style of video, as are the contrasting gorgeous nature shots.

Along with touring the east coast from the start of July, this song is also up for free download on Triple J Unearthed or his website. You lucky kids!
