Live Review: WATCH: The Flaming Lips 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'

12 June 2012 | 10:30 am | Hannah Story

The Flaming Lips' collaboration with Erykah Badu gets a film clip that gets a little intimate. GLITTER.

I, Hannah Story, your official source for all your THE FLAMING LIPS goss, am back, with a brand new video for all your fanboys and fangrrls. Yes, yes, cut the applause guys, I’m just doing my job.

So this one here, ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ is their collaboration with Erykah Badu on The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends. And note, this one is not suitable for work, unless you work at the PURPLE SNEAKERS office, at which point it’s ay-okay! For five minutes Wayne Coyne whirls around a silver cape. His bandmates actually play their instruments.  Badu takes a bath, wearing gorgeous purple eyeshadow. Her sister, Nayrok takes one too. IN GLITTER. Zoom in on that, director. That’s right. Get all the intracicies of that naked human body. Oh and now she’s bathed in blood!? In slow motion? Here’s MORE boodily fluids!?  Sexy?

Erykah Badu is pretty sexy actually. Her ambient vocals lift this song up to reach new electronic heights, reverberating across the soundscape. Styllistcally, the song is a triumph, as is the clip.  Each close-up adds to this intimate picture of the Badus. A very intimate picture, indeed.

BUT SCANDAL! Erykah Badu did not approve of this leaked footage. She wrote an open letter to Coyne himself saying as much; “As a human I am disgusted with your what appears to be desperation and poor execution. And disregard for others. As a director I am unimpressed. As a sociologist I understand your type. As your fellow artist I am uninspired. As a woman I feel violated and underestimated...” Check the letter out in full HERE.
