Live Review: Top 10 Music Videos of 2012 (So Far)

28 June 2012 | 3:00 pm | Staff Writer

Music videos are the best videos, so here's the best of the best of 2012.

How many times have you kicked back to a song and imagined the video for it, only to have the artist announce the song's video clip?

At first you'll think that this is amazing news, that you can confirm your vision for the video...only to watch it and say out loud to yourself, "What the FUCK did I just watch?"

Yeah, it's never pretty. With that in mind, however, here are the top ten music videos of 2012 so far. They might not be what you're expecting, but that is definitely not a bad thing.

Awesome Aussie band having a shitload of fun rocking out with pretend instruments and being hosed. Proves lo-fi video is as awesome as lo-fi audio.

Creepy gothic aliens in the desert and probably dead children? It’s normal, but it looks cool.

8. M.I.A – Bad Girls

M.I.A’s crazy fashion is not surprising. Drag racing shitty cars in the Middle East is a little unexpected and infinitely memorable.

7. Father John Misty – Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings

I may be biased with this one as Aubrey Plaza, star of the hilarious Parks and Recreation, is my most recent celebrity crush. The first video from ex-Fleet Foxes drummer, J. Tillman, proves that drummers can sing. Take that, Dave Grohl!

6. The Bamboos feat. Tim Rogers – I Got Burned

A groovy Australian tune that features fantastic cinematography – the single 4 minute long shot is reminiscent of the classic Copa Cobana sequence in Martin Scorsese’s  gangster epic Goodfellas.

5. Friends – Mind Control

Totally in line with the song title, this one will have you mesmerised with psychedelic visions of people with mouths for eyes and white goop spilling from their zombified faces.

4. Benga – I Will Never Change

This one gets points for being downright awesome and probably taking a shitload of time to execute.

Not a video clip to have on in the background. Immerse yourself in the psychedelia and feel at peace with the world.

This is a very cool use of choose-your-own adventure video. It’s too bad this cute scientist is already enamoured with that creepy-looking dude.

1. Sigur Rós – Fjögur Piano

I have no idea what this is, but it’s amazing. Oh and there’s a lot of artistic nudity so it’s not safe for work. And Shia LaBeouf in his most dramatic role yet.
