Live Review: WATCH: Jake Bugg ‘Lightning Bolt’

31 May 2012 | 12:00 pm | Staff Writer

Check out this youngin Jake Bugg delightfully take on the 60s sound, with a video to match the feel.

Lets be fair. JAKE BUGG is not reinventing the wheel in his debut ‘Lightning Bolt’. Truth be told, he’s spinning the same wheel that was popular about 40 years ago.

That being said, this reviewer will happily spin the old wheel time and time again if said wheel makes him want to scream like a hysterical Beatles fan witnessing the foursome walk out onto airport tarmac. Blues-y and soulful as one can be at 18, Bugg is re-visiting the halcyon days of rock n roll. The Nottingham lad has created a frenzied buzz on the back of his debut video.

The video is abound with 1960s motifs. Shot in Amsterdam and cut with images of BUGG strutting to his heart’s content, ‘Lightning Bolt’ is little more than a three chord progression and kick drum, stripping right back to the bare essentials. Even the grainy quality of the image takes you back a few decades. This all effectively interacts however, to recapture a bygone era of free love, protest and freakin’ awesome music. Pigeon-holing be damned! Finally our generation can enjoy 60s music without the taint of parents. And ladies: take notice, Mr Bugg is one tasty specimen. Like a pretty Gallagher brother.
